The Teatro Pérez Galdós is to hold the autonomous phase of the VIII Certamen Nacional de Interpretación ‘Intercentros Melómano’

The students Victor Naranjo Pérez and Alexis Fernández Brito both compete to represent the Canary Islands in the final certamen

This Friday 27th November at 17:00 hours, the Teatro Pérez Galdós is to hold the autonomous phase of the VIII Certamen Nacional de Interpretación ‘Intercentros Melómano’. This is a contest promoted by the Fundación Orfeo (Orfeo Foundation) with the support of the magazine “Melómano”, from where it gets its name, the Government Delegation for the National Plan on Drugs, the Minister of Culture, through the INAEM (National Institute of Scenic Arts and Music), and the Ministry of Education and Science.

The fundamental criterion on which this Certamen is based is the interpretative quality and musicality, more important than the specific instrumental technique.

The students who are participating in the Certamen are those who have been enrolled in a course specializing in a musical instrument, including singing, with a Professional Level of a professional conservatory or centre authorized with a Professional Level in Spain throughout the 2009-2010 course, except the winners of the first prize of previous editions in the same category and instrument.

From the professional Music conservatories in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the two chosen to compete to represent the Certamen at a national level are Víctor Naranjo Pérez, from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Alexis Fernández Brito, from Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The former is a piano student and the latter studies saxophone.

They have to interpret one or various works or fragments freely chosen by the participant, with the duration being no more than fifteen minutes. The panel of judges is made up of the composer Juan José Falcón Sanabria, the music critic of the daily newspaper La Provincia José Sampedro and the Managing Director of the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, Juan Cambreleng.

The person selected for the Final Phase is to travel to Madrid to participate in the Certamen representing his music conservatory and autonomous community, with a travel grant of 150 euros, which will be handed over by the Organisation on the day of the Final Phase. The contest is to take place in the Cosmo Caixa auditorium on 5th December. The winners may benefit from contracts offering them solo performances and scholarships.
