Ferrán Madico: “We have to claim the right to ‘Electra’ and to Galdós because we are talking about a great classic in universal literature”
The stage director showed himself to be a great fan of the Gran Canarian writer during the presentation of the production, with the presence of the thirteen actors debuting on 6th May in the Teatro Pérez Galdós
The stage director of Electra, by Benito Pérez Galdós, which is to have its debut on the following 6th May in the Teatro Pérez Galdós with adaptation by the academic Francisco Nieva, defines himself as being “a great fan” of the Gran Canarian writer. Ferrán Madico assures you that when you enter the world of Galdós, his chronology and his personalities turn into an obsession”. In this sense it is clear that we have to claim the right to Electra and the author “because we are talking about a great classic in universal literature”.
Ferrán Madico made these declarations during the presentation of the set-up of this piece which took place Thursday 29th April in the Teatro Pérez Galdós, where the performances of Electra are to take place on 6th, 7th and 8th May before travelling on to mainland Spain. The Teatro Español, in Madrid, and the Classic Theatre Festival of Mérida have already shown interest in this ambitious production.
The complete cast, composed of thirteen actors, five of which are native of the Canary Islands, was at the presentation. The actors are: Sara Casasnovas (Electra), Miguel Hermoso Arnao (Máximo), Maru Valdivielso (Evarista), Sergio Otegui (Don Urbano), Antonio Valero (Pantoja), Pep Molina (Marqués de Ronda), Chema Muñoz (Cuesta), Luifer Rodríguez (Mariano), José Conde (Gil), Isabel Prinz (Balbina), Irma Correa (Patros), Antonio Requena (José) and Mari Carmen Sánchez (Sor Dorotea).
The following members of the technical and artistic team were also present: María González, the Gran Canarian costume designer; Juan Gómez Cornejo at the helm of lighting; and Álvaro Luna, the video scenarist.
All of the above members were supported by the director and executive producer, Dania Dévora; the directors of the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, Jerónimo Saavedra, the President and Juan Cambreleng, the Managing Director; and likewise Luz Caballero, the Secretary of Culture of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria.
The politicians involved demonstrated their unconditional support with this production as they believe that this production does great justice to Benito Pérez Galdós and also to the Gran Canarian culture. The City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and also the Cabildo of Gran Canaria were resolute in their collaboration in organizing a series of parallel activities with the aim of “informing the citizens of the moment in which Electra was created in this country and thus leading to a greater appreciation of the literary work”, as was pointed out by Saavedra.
The parallel activities are to begin next Monday, 3rd May with the inauguration of a documental exhibition about the debut of Electra in 1901. This is to be shown in the Saint-Saëns Hall of the Teatro Pérez Galdós and will remain until 17th May. In addition to the exhibition, a seminar Electra y su tiempo, a spoken theatre session and a floral offering to the sculpture of Benito Pérez Galdós which is to be found at the front of the Teatro has also been organized.
