The 2010-2011 Season gets off to a start with the theatrical piece ‘The Merchant of Venice’ by William Shakespeare

The director of the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, Jerónimo Saavedra and Juan Cambreleng, assure the quality and variation in the programming in spite of the restricted budgeting

The 2010-2011 Season, as programmed by the Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation, is to open with a grandiose theatral production, insisting on the presentation of drama. Rafael Pérez Sierra’s acclaimed version of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare is an exuberant opening in October to the programming of the Teatro Pérez Galdós.

The production by Darek Teatro, with Denis Rafter at the helm of stage direction, is an indication of the goals set out by those at the head of the Foundation for this upcoming Season. In the presentation ceremony which took place this Tuesday 8th June, its President, Jerónimo Saavedra, and the Managing Director, Juan Cambreleng, both highlighted the “quality and variation in the programming”, as well as the two main guarantees in spite of the restricted budgeting.

Decisive in the achievement of these goals has been the collaboration with diverse institutions and cultural entities, amongst which are the Canary Islands’ Music Festival, the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Philharmonic Society, the Alfredo Kraus Auditorium, the Teatro Cuyás and the Vice- Chancellor for Culture of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Due to this support offered, considerable achievements were possible, for example, celebrating one of the concerts, specifically that of Stabat Mater by Rossini, of the Canary Islands’ Music Festival in the Pérez Galdós; offering an outstanding piano series which commemorates the two hundredth anniversary of the birth of the renowned composers Chopin and Schumann; and also incorporating one of the concerts of the Jazz Otoño Festival which is to be held in different areas in the Gran Canarian capital city.

The diverse tastes of the public were taken into account when programming the new season. One of the most popular genres, the musical, returns once again to the Pérez Galdós in January with the magnificent production of Chicago. Drama, Jazz and Piano, as already mentioned, are to share importance with Ballet, Opera and Lyrical concerts. This Season even the children will be able to enjoy our Teatro by means of the various performances with a pedagogical goal.
