The Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation celebrated the presentation of the 2010-2011 Season with a dance performance and a ‘flash mob’
The Stagno Square, located beside the Teatro Pérez Galdós, pulsated on Friday 11th June thanks to an entertaining performance where hundreds of people took part. A dance performance with themes from the musical Chicago attracted the audience, surprised by the first great flash mob to be celebrated in the Canary Islands.
The Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation wished to celebrate the presentation of the up-and-coming 2010-2011 Season outdoors which was greatly livened up with the aid of the dance group Danza-Taller, ascribed to the Juan Rodríguez Doreste Popular University Project by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria city council.
The dancers performed various themes from the musical Chicago, one of the main attractions of the following season. The choreographies were performed by members of the scenic arts project by the Juan Rodríguez Doreste Popular University, with musical numbers based on the original versions by Bob Fosse and adapted by the choreographer and director of the project, Chago Rodríguez.
The chosen pieces were All That Jazz, with the actress Nayra Ortega Medina playing the part of Velma Nelly; When you’re good to mama, with the actress Olimpia Pérez Farre; Mister Cellophane, performed by Chago Rodríguez; and Nowadays, with Nayra Ortega Medina and Eleonora González Suárez.
The spectators were surprised by a flash mob which took place at the end of this performance. A flash mob is when a large group of people suddenly assemble in a public place, perform an unusual and pointless act for a brief time and then quickly disperse. This term is generally applied only to gatherings via telecommunications (mobile phones and Internet) and is usually for entertainment purposes, although it may also be for political, revindicative, social or cultural purposes, as is here the case.
The Teatro Pérez Galdós Canary Islands’ Foundation’s main aim of this action in the street was to attract the people’s attention and to arouse their curiosity in getting to know the programming of the new season. After the official presentation to the means of communication, to those in charge of the cultural entities and to the Amigos (Friends) of the Pérez Galdós, the aim was to go a step further and take the Teatro to the street so that it could be seen as a live area that wishes to be brought closer to all the public.
The variety of genres and disciplines integrated in the new programming is proof of the eagerness to open the season. Not only is there to be opera and classical music, but also ballet, jazz and musical performances have been programmed.
