Dramatic theatre has been afforded an even more central role in the programming for this 2009-2010 season, with Benito Pérez Galdós once again playing a pivotal part. Electra, the work of the internationally renowned writer from the Canary Islands, is closely linked to the very history of this theatre. The national success of the piece when it first opened in 1901 was what led the theatre (called Teatro Tirso de Molina at that time) to change its name to Teatro Pérez Galdós.
Electra is to be unveiled at the Gran Canarian coliseum by the Canary Island production company DD&Company, with set design falling on the shoulders of Ferrán Madico.
The Spanish-based British director treats us to an emotional and fresh look at Electra, a drama that tackles the personal conflicts of a young, clever and cheerful orphan, namely Electra. Taken in by her aunt and uncle, who enjoy high social status and care deeply about charity, it’s not long before Electra begins to feel increasing pressure from her environment to either follow in the path of religion or secularism.
